Hennepin West Mesonet
Hennepin County Digital Service
About the Hennepin West Mesonet project
The Hennepin County Emergency Management department uses its Mesonet application to provide real-time data to emergency managers and incident commanders in east-central Minnesota. This environmental information is used to support their critical response decisions. They were paying a vendor over $400,000 a year for hosting and support and needed to bring this system in-house. We moved this site to systems supported by the county, redesigned it with a modern interface and better performance, and improved the data handling methods.
My role included:
- Working with Enterprise Architecture and GIS to select the appropriate technology for the designed solution.
- Consulting throughout the project on the implementation design and chosen technologies.
- Researching to determine data sources and functional requirements.
- Creating wireframes and information architecture.
- Consulting on the feasibility of visual design iterations and data requirements.
- Delivering production front-end code.
- Consulting with vendors on data presentation, back-end development, and content management system build-out.
